Export financing may sound complex and exotic, but in fact opportunities exist even for small credit unions that offer business loans to their members. US Small Business Administration (SBA) has several loan guarantee programs targeted to help small business exporters – the International Trade Loan, Export Express, and Export Working Capital Program. These offer lenders including credit unions a 90% loan guarantee – the highest level SBA offers – when lending to small businesses involved in exporting. But what exactly is a “small business”? And what does it take to be considered an “exporter”? Jeff Deiss will cut through the jargon and lay out the opportunities for credit unions to offer SBA export financing to their business members.
Speaker: Jeff Deiss, Regional Export Finance Manager, Office of International Trade
Jeff is a Regional Export Finance Manager with the US Small Business Administration (SBA), a position he has held since 2011. He is one of 20 such SBA loan officers in the nation who provide export financing assistance as part of the suite of services available from multi-agency US Export Assistance Centers (USEAC’s). After working 2 years in Portland, OR, Jeff opened SBA’s San Francisco, CA export office in late 2013. He works with exporters and commercial lenders in northern and central California to find export financing solutions for small businesses. He also serves as the team leader for all of SBA’s export finance officers in the Western US.
Prior to joining SBA, Jeff was involved in commercial lending at USDA Rural Development where he was responsible for delivering a variety of financing programs to address the needs of rural communities. From 2005 to 2011, Jeff was USDA’s Business Programs Director in Oregon where he oversaw the delivery of business financing and economic development programs. He began his career with USDA in 1983 doing agricultural lending.
Jeff holds an MS and BS from the University of California Davis, and a BA from Claremont McKenna College.
